At the start of the year in April the Sony Xperia Z2 was released and hit the shelves and a network provider near you and its barely six months old! Sony have announced and soon to release the upgrade for the Z2 in the form of the Sony Xperia Z3. The Z2 was and still is an excellent phone however is it a premature update and are there enough improvements on the Z3 to warrant it a price worthy purchase or should you just get the Z2 as it drops in price and if you did would you be missing out massively on what the Xperia Z3 offers?

Design

As you would expect the Sony Xperia Z3 is marked with the same design language as the Z2 and both have the aluminium frame yet the Z3 possesses a sleeker figure and profile along with minutely slightly more curved corners. The Xperia Z2 is 8.2mm thick weighing in a light 163 grams while the Z3 has slimed down to just 7.3mm and only 152 grams in weight! Both handsets are water and dust resistant. So at least in regards to eye catching design the changes are merely cosmetic.

Display

Not much changes with this new upgrade! Excellent for your viewing pleasure Sony have opted for power saving reasons to keep the same 5.2 inch Triluminous IPS LCD display at 1080 pixels in full HD! Off the tip of the tongue in one breath the only difference here is the Z3 offers tempered glass which adds to the overall sleek look also boosting luminosity!

Hardware

Again its hard to spot the difference between the two phones here. Both have on board the same quad core processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 Krait 400. The only difference is Sony have tinkered with the clock speed raising it from 2.3 Ghz to 2.5 Ghz for the new Xperia Z3 which is hardly a quantum leap! Both handset’s wear the Adreno 330 GPU with 3 GB of RAM under the sleeve which insures a liquid smooth navigational experience along with multitasking whilst hardcore gaming! In terms of on board storage with the Z3 you have the choice to get it in either 16 or 32GB models, the Z2 has only the standard 16GB to play with before you can get started on the 128GB SD card slot!

Software

As you would expect the Z3 outshines its predecessor with a new upgrade on it’s software running on the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat whereas the Z2 still operates on KitKat on 4.4.2 which isn’t old but it isn’t new either! Both devices will be upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop at the beginning of 2015! Sony use their own UI which is pleasant to use and makes multitasking a breeze and easy to keep on top with! The Z3 also has a few extra goodies woven in its software spectrum including the ability to record an capture your screen and via WiFi to wirelessly stream and play your PS4! This is feature now available to the Z2 too! (October 4th 2014)

Camera

Hasn’t changed in the slightest in terms of hardware still shooting 20.7MP at 1080p and with the same 2.2MP front facing camera to boot. It does come with a few extra features including steady shot, live youtube uploading, intelligent active mode, AR fun and multicamera mode! According to Sony the Z3 also has advanced G Lens optics allowing users to take photo’s with wider viewing angles from the same distance as before, Sony have also upped the ISO to 12800, something not offered on any other smartphone designed to help capture images much better in low lighting conditions. Both phones also can still shoot in 4k!

Battery

The Z2 was notorious for its long lasting non-removeable 3200mAH battery which in stamina mode is said to last 1.4 days depending on usage, the Z3 has a 3100mAH battery which appears to be a downgrade yet Sony have tested it extensively and say it is should now last two whole days which again is better then most smartphones out there!

Conclusion

in conclusion this is a steady upgrade, you get an even sleeker slimline minimalist handset with an improved operating system behind the same smooth UI Sony skin. The battery durability has been improved the screen brightness and the processor modified to be just that little bit faster. The changes aren’t staggering and not to be expected after only just six months but they are a comfortable improvement.
