As tradition dictates on the eve of MWC in the warm climate of Barcelona in the heated shade and air conditioned stage Samsung reveal their latest pair of smartphone to lead into the new year this 2018. The world has waited and speculated on what Samsung can pull out of their proverbial bag of tricks. This year Samsung choose to apparently do what can’t be done. Their new slogan for the S9 and S9 Plus chants the following phrase “Do what you can’t” with their team of engineers and inventors and problem solvers which “Do what can’t be made” so that you can “Do what can’t be done” this catchy slogan introduces the new Samsung galaxy range to a round of applause.

President and head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Communications Division, DJ Koh welcomes everyone to the event. He coins the new phrase, the Intelligence Of Things when he refers to A.I and Virtual Reality, he communicates his belief in the people and Samsung’s customers that open the door to creating new and better more innovative products. He covers the initial history and need of the mobile phone beginning in 1988 and it’s subsequent rapid evolution. Articulating in vastly improved and intelligible English “Why can’t you use a mobile phone to listen to music and why can’t I take pictures or watch videos?” Dj Koh outlines that Samsung is inspired by the questions asked by their customers.

He presses further that his company listens with an attentive ear to their customers. Turning Impossible ideas into tomorrow’s essential capabilities. Rattling off this foreign tongue twister with ease, DJ Koh reminds everyone that it was Samsung to first make a mobile phone with an MP3 player and built in camera. Since the very beginning Samsung has remained as a mobile pioneer creating the Phablet and the dual edge Infinity Display. After much introduction and historical footnotes DJ Koh announces the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus and a new page and history is re-imagined and re-made.

Justin Denison, the Senior Vice President of Product Marketing steps upon the stage to take us all through the essential details and improvements which the S9 and S9 Plus both possess. He starts with a pioneering reminder of the S8 and Note 8 and the Infinity Display, helping you see and do more with more screen in less space becoming an industry gamechanger. Samsung keep with the foundation of their Infinity Display and listen to customer feedback adding the new fingerprint sensor to just below the rear camera. Adding further to security is Samsung’s new Intelligence Scan, combining the elements of an Iris Scanner and Facial Recognition making it even more easier to unlock your phone in multiple scenarios whatever and whenever the call.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus comes in 4 colours, Midnight Black, Titanium Grey, Coral Blue and an all new Lilac Purple. With the magic of Augmented Reality Justin invited attendees to the event to hold the S9 in their palms using the specially crafted Samsung App Badge. This transformed the media badge into a virtual Samsung Galaxy S9. Giving a sneak peek to the new device in all her technicolours of glory. Next the new Camera is touted by Justin Denison. What if the camera adapted to our surroundings like a human eye, what if it could slow down time? What if it could put more self into self expression and what if it could translate the world around you. To answer these questions Justin welcomes Jonathan Wong to explain these new Re-imagined features.

Wong confidently reveals a new dual aperture smartphone camera which adapts to light like the pupil of the human eye. If it’s bright the camera will automatically adjust to the smaller aperture, visa versa it’s versatile enough to adjust it’s scale to the wider aperture to aquire more light and take finer detailed photo and video during the night. This is the widest aperture ever used on a smartphone with the dual F1.5 and adjustable F2.4 lens. The camera features a new generation and foundation with on board D-RAM memory chip fitted directly into the camera. This helps process four times more image data as before with the new Samsung Superspeed Dual Pixel Image Sensor. This makes it possible to capture an incredible slow motion effect of 960 frames per second.

To emphasise his point Jonathan Wong illuminates that 960fps is the equivalent of slowing down a blink of the human eye and stretching it out for a further six seconds. This puts into context how detailed the slow motion effect has become with Samsung patented technology. This effect is trailed and tested on the SGS9 by everyone’s favourite YouTubers Dan and Gavin the ‘Slow-Mo Guys’ who test the new device and mode out with much extended glee. At 960fps the smartphone industry standard of 240fps has been smashed to peices and Dan and Gavin will be sharing some of their slow mo methods on Samsung’s own YT channel in the following weeks.

Further implementation of the new slow motion effect features an auto capture mode. Allowing you to select a specific part of the screen, when any motion occurs within that selected part of the screen it is captured in the new crisp slow motion. This video can also be tuned into a GIF to be played forward or backwards or on a loop, whatever your choice. Jonathan and his lab coat assistant do a live demonstration of the new effect featuring a glass of water which is met with excited appreciated applause. Your favourite super slow mo footage can also be set as the phones lock screen for an added personal touch. The S9 and S9 Plus both feature a Micro-SD expansion slot for all this extra detailed footage. the S9 and S9 Plus both feature Dual Aperture Multi-Frame Processing. However the S9 Plus features a wide angle lens along with a telephoto lens with Optical Imaging Stabilisation built into both lenses.

Erin Willis is welcomed to the stage and she introduces Augmented Reality Emojis or AR Emojis for short. This is a nifty new feature imagined and made anew by Samsung. Take a quick selfie photo of yourself and you can create your own Emoji featuring your very own personalised cartooned Disney face and body. A welcomed gimmick.

Bixby includes a time saving Make-Up mode for the feminine of the species. This helps you save the time for finding the correct eye liner and foundation with Augmented Make-Up. Helping you find and purchase the right make-up for your own personalised style before even brushing it upon your face. This feature will be live on launch in the US, Canada, Korea and China.

Mark Notton is next to step on the stage. Outlining for us that the S9 has a 5.8 inch display with the S9 Plus carrying itself with a 6.2 inch Infinity display. With vivid viewing night or day. The sound on the S9 features the loudest speakers ever on a Galaxy Phone. These are all new AKG tuned speakers working in partnership with Dolby Atmos Cinematic Immersive Sound. Mark also reveals The S9 will still features a 3.5 headphone socket in the convenient place at the bottom of the device. Additionally Samsung’s Home-Screen now features Horizontal Orientation, meaning you can hold the phone on its side and browses through all it’s multitasking features.

Lastly Eui Suk Chung, the head of research and development is welcomed gracefully upon the stage. He takes us through the software featured with both new Samsung devices. Including Samsung Pay and Bixby which Samsung maintains as it’s goal will be the crowning personal intelligence, evolving to your own needs every day, ubiquitous existing and integrating onto all devices including Samsung Dex.
